Buying used car rims online is like buying anything else online.  You have to be careful of where you go to purchase the rims and how much you pay for them.  Because they are used you want to get a deal, but be cautious of TOO much of a deal.

Here are 5 things to look out for when buying used car rims online.

1. Tread depth

Ask the seller what the tire tread depth is prior to purchasing anything.  If the seller is within driving range for you, ask them if you can take the tires to an auto parts store and get a tire tread depth checker.

2. Proper tread measurements

As you check the tire tread depth or ask for it from the seller, make sure it is below 2/32".  A tire tread wears down around 2/32" on the front tires about every 3,000 to 6,000 miles.  You can get away with 3/32" before you absolutely need to replace the tires, but do not purchase anything above 2/32".

3. Tire pressure

While you are asking for the tread depth, ask what the tire pressure is like as well.  The seller could lie to you, but you asking them all of these questions will show them that you care.  If the tire pressure is low it does not mean you should not buy the tires.  But it does mean that you should look into what else is wrong if anything.

4. Watch for leaking

When buying used car rims online, you want to make sure there is no leakage on the sidewall of the tire.  If there is, the tire is no good and not repairable.  There are some exceptions to this, as it can be repaired for a little price if it is leaking in the tread.  Regardless, if there is any kind of leak it could be nothing or it could be a bent rim.  Be cautious of this.

5. Obvious wear and tear

Because you are buying used car rims online, there is going to be some kind of wear and tear probably.  You have to take this into consideration when examining the tire, but be cautious of normal wear and tear and things that are beyond that.  For example, a crack in the rim is far from normal wear and tear.  You should also look for any dents, scratches, or bulges that would make it look like they hit the curb.

Buying used car rims online can be difficult because you do not always get the opportunity to take the tires to an auto store and have them inspected.  But you should always ask the seller about these things and maybe even ask them to take pictures and send them to you.  All you are looking for is safe rims that you can purchase and place on your set of wheels.
